Linköping Cathedral

The Cathedral of Linköping is one of the best preserved and richly decorated medieval cathedrals in Sweden. She's Episcopal Church of the Diocese of Linköping.

History

The first stone church in the village was built in the first half of the 12th century. It was a Romanesque basilica, which occupied about half the floor space of the current cathedral. The foundations of this church were uncovered during archaeological excavations at the beginning and the middle of the 20th century. Even in the days of the first church was Linkoping ( Liunga Kaupinga ) in a document, which today is located in Florence, called as a bishop 's seat.

Around 1230 they started in Linköping with the construction of a dome, but due to renovations and additions was the construction finally more than 250 years. While the oldest part is still Romanesque, the nave and choir is gothic. In the south aisle, for example, replaced the Romanesque arch suddenly the Gothic pointed arch. The choir and the polygonal east tower, built in the 15th century, were built under the direction of the Cologne architect Gierlach and Adam von Düren, and many stone carvings bear the mark of Cologne stonemasons.

1747-1758 the west tower was built, which was changed in a drastic remodeling of the western part of the church in the second half of the 19th century by the architect Heligoland Zettervall in neo-Gothic spirit.

The medieval stone carvings are still largely intact, with the exception of the sculptures around the main portal, which date from the 19th century.
