Lion of Judah

The Lion of Judah has its origins in the Genesis of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) where the Israelite tribe of Judah leads a lion as its symbol.

Lion of Judah and Judaism

In Judaism, the Biblical Judah ( in Hebrew: Yehuda) is named after the tribe of Judah, which is traditionally symbolized by a lion. In Genesis 49.9 LUT the father of Jacob by his son Judah as a Gur Aryeh speaks (Hebrew for " young lions " ), as he blesses him. In the Jewish naming of the Hebrew name and his deputy is traditionally combined into a couple, as in this case.

By combining the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who is regarded as the most powerful tribe among the old - Israelite tribes, the legendary descendants of the kingdom of Judah, Judea and the modern Jews are Jews variations and translations of the word "lion " is often synonymous for Judah ( Yehuda) needed. An example of this is the name of Rabbi Yehuda Loew ben Bezalel. Loew is the Yiddish word for "lion". The popular and modern Hebrew name Ari (also Arieh or Aryeh ) means " lion".

Lion of Judah in Christianity

In Christian tradition, the Lion is called to represent Jesus. Many Christian organizations and preaching offices use the lion of Judah as their emblem or even in their name.

The passage appeared in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelation (5.5 LUT): " And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not; See, it has overcome the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, open the scroll and its seven seals. "

Georg Philipp Telemann created the long Johann Sebastian Bach Cantata attributed to Michaelis hard, Behold, hath prevailed ( BWV 219, TVWV 1:1328 ).

In Heinrich von Herzogenbergs The Passion ( op.93 ), this is the comforting answer to the death of Jesus: "Do not cry! See, it has overcome the lion that is because of the race of Judah. The Lamb that was slain is worthy to receive glory, and blessing. Amen. " (No. 31, Chorus )

The use of a lion in Clive Staples Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia as a messianic figure is seen as a possible connection to this part of the disclosure.

The Lion of Judah in the Rastafari

In the Rastafari former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie is regarded as " Lion of Judah ". They believe in the Ethiopian legend that he is the direct descendant of Menelik, the son of King Solomon from the Israelite tribe of Judah and the Queen of Sheba. They saw the Emperor a messianic figure who is mentioned as the " Lion of Judah " in the Book of Revelation.

The terms " chosen by God " and " Victorious Lion of Judah " are not as often assumed the title coronation Selassie, but part of a profession of faith, with which the Ethiopian emperors traditionally ushered her letters.

The theme of the "Lion of Judah " is also addressed in the published 1992 song Iron Lion Zion by Bob Marley.
