Lipovac (Aleksinac)

Lipovac (Cyrillic: Липовац ) is a village in eastern Serbia.

Geography and population

The village lies in the Opština Aleksinac in Nišavski okrug in the east to 468 meters above sea level. Lipovac had in the census of 2011 a population of 339 inhabitants, while there were 418 in 1991. 1948 lived in the village still 881 people. After the last three population statistics, the population continues to fall.

The population of Lipovac looks, according to the census, 98% as Serbian Orthodox Serbs, but there are also minorities of 8 Orthodox Roma, represent the 2 % of the population. The village consists of 153 households.

The village is 10 km north-east from the city of Aleksinac. Lipovac is located at the foot of Ozren Mountains.

Demography

History

Above the village are the remains of the medieval fortress of Lipovac that is mentioned in the 15th century for the first time. Also a Roman fortress is said to have been found at the site. Under the fortress stands the Serbian Orthodox Monastery Manastir Lipovac, which was built in 1399 on behalf of Stefan Lazarević.

The monastery is under the protection of the Republic of Serbia, as a cultural monument of great importance. The Manastir Lipovac was originally dedicated to the Holy Archdeacon Stefan Erstmärtyrer and today the monastery church of the Transfiguration of Christ, however, is dedicated. In the village there is no Serbian Orthodox Church.

In the resort an orphanage for poor children in 1930 by King Alexander I. founded. From 2008 to 2012 was Dragoslav Radojičić village mayor of Lipovac.
