Lippe (department)

The Department lip (French Département de la Lippe) was formed northeast as a French administrative district of the Rhine, north of the lip and west of the Ems on April 27, 1811 after by France in December 1810 to enforce the Continental System the annexation of the Principality of Salm, of the Duchy of it was decided to Arenberg - Meppen and located north of the lip portions of the Grand Duchy of Berg. It was until November 1813.

Was named the department after the river on its southern border to the Grand Duchy of Berg, which was significantly reduced in size by annexing its northern parts of the country.

Made was the department in the following areas:

  • Rechtsrheinische parts of the former Duchy of Cleves, who had heard the Grand Duchy of Berg since 1806,
  • The former dominions Anholt and Gemen and the former offices Bocholt and Ahaus of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster, which had belonged to the Principality of Salm since 1803 or 1806,
  • The former office of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster Dülmen ( from 1803 Dülmen County ), which had belonged to the Duchy of Arenberg - Meppen since 1806,
  • The former counties of Bentheim and Steinfurt and the former Office of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster Horstmar ( from 1803 County Salm- Horstmar ), which had belonged to the Grand Duchy of Berg from 1806 or 1808
  • The other territories of the former prince-bishopric cathedral north of the lip or a line of holders to Telgte, who had in the meantime the Kingdom of Prussia and from 1808 onwards as part of Erbfürstentum Munster at the Grand Duchy of Berg.

Only for a short transition period were these areas by French decree of December 26, 1810 the arrondissements of Rees and Münster, Department Upper Yssel ( Yssel - Supérieur ), the arrondissement of Steinfurt, department Yssel - mouth ( Bouches -de- l'Yssel ) and the district 's New House, Département West Ems assigned (Ems - Occidental) and were allocated in Liege to the jurisdiction of the Imperial Court.

Capital was Münster. The new Département de la lip was divided into four arrondissements and cantons more:

  • Arrondissement Muenster ( Munster) with the cantons Dülmen, holders, Münster, Nottuln and St. Mauritz ( Saint Maurice),
  • Arrondissement New house, with the cantons of Bentheim, Heede, New House, North Horn and Wesuwe
  • Arrondissement Rees, with the cantons of Bocholt, Borken, Emmerich, Rees, Ringberg and urban wage
  • Arrondissement of Steinfurt with the cantons Ahaus, Billerbeck, Coesfeld, Ochtrup, Rheine and Steinfurt.

The prefect was from 1811-1813 Jean Charles de Victorin Lasteyrie du Saillant ( since 1810 Comte du Saillant ), entitled Chamberlain ( Camerarius, French cham bellan ), from 1813 the Comte Dusaillaux.

After the defeat of Napoleon I in 1814, the Department between the kingdoms of Hanover and Prussia was divided.
