Liptovská Mara

The Liptauer reservoir ( slowak. Liptovská Mara ) is a dam on the river Vah in Slovakia near the town of Liptovsky Mikulas in the Liptau.

The dam was built between 1965 and 1975. The water area is 22 km ², its maximum depth is 45 meters. With a storage capacity of 360 million cubic meters of water, it is the largest water tank (by volume) of Slovakia. For the construction of several villages were completely abandoned (including Liptovská Sielnica, Paludza, Parizovce, Nežitovce, Zádiel, Dechtáre, Sokolce, Čemice, Vŕbie, Ráztoky and the eponymous Liptovská Mara ); Parts of places Bobrovník, Liptovsky Trnovec and Benice were flooded. Some of the buildings in these villages, among others the early Gothic Church of Liptovská Mara, were transferred to the village museum Liptov. These are also the main railway Žilina - Košice and the main road from Žilina were moved to Poprad and a section of the D1 motorway built today (opening 1977).

Primary function of the dam is flood control, but it is also used for electric power generation, which produce an output of 200 MW 4 turbines. The use of tourism and recreation believed to be currently relatively limited. There is a recreation center in Liptovsky Trnovec with the nearby Tatralandia.

The Ratkovie Peninsula and it is water surrounding area reserve. On the west bank at the community Bobrovník is the archaeological site Havránok.
