Lisandro Otero

Lisandro Otero ( born June 4, 1933, Havana, Cuba; † 3 January 2008) was a Cuban writer, journalist and diplomat.

Life

Lisandro Otero studied philosophy in Havana until 1954 and made a journalism degree from the Manuel Márquez -Sterling school. From 1954 to 1956 he studied literature at the Sorbonne. He was editor in chief of Cuban periodicals such as magazines or Revolución y Cultura Cuba. He also works with other newspapers together as bohemia, The Posters, Granma, Juventud Rebelde, El Mundo, Casa de las Américas, Unión, La Gaceta de Cuba, as well as in Le Monde Diplomatique, Partisans, Europe, Washington Post, Excelsior from Mexico and last with El Sol de Mexico. In Chile, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, he worked as Kulturattacheé.

Since 2004, Lisandro Otero was President of the Cuban Academy of Language.

Work and honors

Otero was one of the most important authors of Cuba. He has published more than 20 books and numerous essays, short stories and journalistic essays. His work has been translated into fourteen languages.

Otero 1963 situación awarded the Literature Prize of the Casa de las Américas La competition. In 1965, he earned an award in the competition of the Biblioteca Breve in Barcelona for his novel Pasión de Urbino ( Urbino Passion) and in 1983 was awarded the prize of literary criticism for Temporadas de Angeles. He was National award winner for literature in 2002. In 1991 he was awarded the honorary professorship from the Academy of Fine Arts in Havana. In addition, Otero was awarded the National Prize for Journalism in Cuba, Félix Elmuza Order, the medal for the fighters secretly fight and the Commemorative Medal for the 30th anniversary of the Cuban army, and the Alejo Carpentier Medal honored.

He was a member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish language as well as a member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language

He wrote the book for the musical El Solar. His works were, Italian, French, English, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Czech translated into German.
