Lisboa e Vale do Tejo

Lisboa e Vale do Tejo ( Lisbon and Tagus Valley ) is the former name of a region in Portugal. It included the entire District of Lisbon, almost the entire District of Santarém, Setúbal half of the district, as well as approximately one-third of the district of Leiria.

Neighboring regions were the Centro Region in the north and the Alentejo in the East and South. In the west and south lies the Atlantic Ocean.

The Lisboa e Vele do Tejo region comprised of 11,633 km ² 13% of continental Portugal. The region had a population of 3.5 million (2001, 35 % of continental Portugal).

There were five statistical regions:

  • Grande Lisboa
  • Lezíria do Tejo
  • Medio Tejo
  • Oeste
  • Península de Setúbal

In the region of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo 51 agglomerations (16.5% of all Portuguese municipalities).

In 2002, the region was dissolved and divided the sub-regions on the Centro, Alentejo and the Região de Lisboa newly established.
