List of Governors of California before admission

This is a list of Governors of Upper California before it became a U.S. state. From 1769 Alta California was a province of New Spain. After the Mexican War of Independence, today's California belonged to Mexico, initially as part of the Historic California, and later as a separate province. Following annexation by the United States in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War, California was first a " Unorganized Territory " until it was 31 state of the United States on September 9, 1850.
