List of mayors of Bremen

Mayor of Bremen are persons who have held the office of mayor in the country Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the Bremen or holder.

Current situation

The government of the State of Bremen consists of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (official name: Senator ). The Senate members are elected by the Bremen Parliament, while the President of the Senate, first elected (Art. 107 para 2 of the state constitution of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen [LV ] ).

The President of the Senate and another to be selected by the Senate Senator are (due Hanseatic tradition ) mayor.

The President of the Senate is the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, manages the affairs of the Senate and its meetings and represents it to the outside. The President of the Senate corresponds to the Prime Minister in other German countries and is regularly appointed as a member of the Federal Council. He is also a member of the German Association of Cities.

The city of Bremen and Bremerhaven, form each for a congregation of Bremen State (Art. 143 para 1 LV). The city of Bremen is acc. Article 148, paragraph 1 LV by the Senate of Bremen co-ruled in Real Union. In the city of Bremerhaven is the magistrate ( city council ), consisting of the mayor, the mayor ( deputy) and the magistrates, elected on the basis of its own municipal constitution of the city council.

Current Mayor and President of the Senate is the SPD politician Böhrnsen leading a Red-Green coalition. Deputy of Böhrnsen is the Mayor and Senator for Finance, Karoline Linnert of Alliance 90/The Greens.

Mayor as a representative of the President

In the state constitution has been set: The President of the Senate, first by the other mayors and if necessary by another, he designated member of the Senate represented (Art. 115 para 1 LV). The term deputy mayor does not apply in Bremen. The mayors are both senators.

History

In a list of the mayor of Bremen, a large number of mayors of the city of Bremen are listed from 1344 until today.

From 1344 to 1849

At the head of the ruling council third in Bremer Rath of Kayser Lichen Freyen Imperial and Hanseatic city since 1344 was the mayor.

It ruled from 1398 to 1426 and again from 1433 bis 1852/53 at the same time four mayors ( in between there were two mayor ) and 20 councilors, five each from each of the four districts ( parishes ). On termination of a mayor, a new mayor was always nachgewählt. It was therefore a distinction to 1852 /53 in four lines. The four lines resulted from the fact that the four parishes - Our Lady, Ansgarii, Martini and Stephani - each provided a mayor. The reigns of the mayor overlapped. The Mayor of the Hanseatic city were appointed by the Council ( since 1822 the Senate ).

In the Bremer French period 1811 to 1813 by the French prefect of the department of the Weser estuaries a Maire (Mayor ) and the municipal council was ( council ) appointed.

After 1813, the Council again consisted of four mayors and 24 councilors, most of which were called senators. Since 1822 from the " high noble high ways Rath" of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Most mayors had their office until their death.

1849-1918

1849, provided for in the old city of Bremen Rights Council Constitution was replaced. 1852, after the Revolution, was determined by a new Senate election law that citizenship and the Senate certain five electors. These 10 electors chose five candidates proposed by the citizenry three candidates, from which the Senate and any new Senator elected. The Senate determined the two mayors from among their ranks. On termination of a mayor, a new mayor was always nachgewählt. Most mayors were lawyers in the 19th century.

Between 1882 and 1918, two mayors were elected for four years from the Senate. One of them, the Senate determined for a calendar year as President of the Senate. In these 36 years there were eleven ( or twelve) Presidents, mostly occupied several terms of office; Alfred Dominicus Pauli alone had seven terms.

1918-1933

After the Bremen Soviet Republic in January 1919 state elections were held again. Since then, the President of the Senate is as head of state of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen both mayor and mayor of the city of Bremen. From traditional Hanseatic reasons were and are in Bremen, in contrast to most German cities, still only the title of mayor and not the mayor. The Deputy President of the Senate and Mayor also carries the title of mayor and senator.

1933-1945

At the time of National Socialism in Bremen, the four incumbents were not filled by election as mayor. On March 18, 1933, the Senate was appointed by the Minister of the Interior over the Reich Commissioner for Bremen. The appointments of the other mayor was made by the imperial governor Oldenburg / Bremen.

After 1945

After the Second World War, there have been seven Presidents of the Senate (also mayor) and 15 other mayors, representing the President. Since 2000, the President of the Senate is elected in a separate ballot from Bremen city council, however, the deputy mayors by the Senate (Article 107, paragraph 2 and Article 114 BremLV ).
