LISTSERV is an application for managing mailing lists, which was originally developed in mid -1980s for the U.S. computer network BITNET. LISTSERV was developed in 1986 by Eric Thomas and was the first software for the management of mailing lists at all.

LISTSERV originally ran on IBM mainframes under the operating system VM (Virtual Machine) and used IBM - specific communication protocols such as RSCS (Remote Spooling Communication Subsystem).
