Lobsang Chökyi Gyaltsen, 4th Panchen Lama

Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltshen ( Tib. blo bzang chos kyi rgyal mtshan; * 1570, † 1662) was the first in the title Penchen Lama from the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatsho. He is regarded as a 4th Penchen Lama of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism by the retroactive recognition of three other Penchen Lamas.

Life

Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltshen was tutor of the 5th Dalai Lama and many other famous people of Tibetan Buddhism. The 5th Dalai Lama appreciated his teacher so high that he referred to him as an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, and earned him the title " Penchen Lama " ( Big learned Guru ) awarded.

The first Buddhist vows Lobsang Chokyi received Gyeltshen of Sanggye Yeshe ( 1525-1590/1591 ) at the age of 13 years. At 14 he began to study Buddhism in Trashilhünpo. At 22 he received full ordination of Penchen Damchö Yarphel (* 16th century). At 30 he became the abbot of Trashi Lungpo. At the age of 34, he was the 4th Dalai Lama, the monk vows. In 1626 he became abbot of the " Changtse " ( Tib: byang rtse ) Faculty of Ganden Monastery.

After Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltshen was in 1662 died in 93 years, the 5th Dalai Lama began the search for the reincarnation of Lama Penchen. He wrote a special prayer in which he asked his teacher about return and dismissed the monks of the Gelug monasteries to recite at it. He also reserved the title " Penchen " ( Sanskrit: Mahapandita ), which was originally used for other persons of Tibetan Buddhism, exclusively for " Penchen Lamas ". Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltshen wrote many texts and commentaries on the Tibetan Buddhism.
