Lochwinnoch

Lochwinnoch is a city in the southwest of the Scottish Unitary Authority Renfrewshire. It lies on the northwestern shore of Castle Semple Loch 16 km southwest of Paisley. The nearest town is four kilometers away Howwood. With the Lochwinnoch Parish Church is a Denkmkal the highest Scottish Category A monument in Lochwinnoch.

History

The origin of the place name is not really clear, as it probably was not a lake called Loch Winnoch in the past. Supposedly existed in the past almost forty different spellings of the name. One explanation is that it is derived from the Holy Winnok. With industrialization, textile and leather processing companies settled in Lochwinnoch. Later furniture producers were added. Today there are in the village only a few industries.

The delocalisation of industry is reflected in the population figures. So lived in 1841 still 4716 people in Lochwinnoch. During the 19th century, the number decreased continuously to finally 3369 in 1881. Between 1951 and 2001, a population increase from 1950 to 2570 inhabitants is recorded.

Traffic

Lochwinnoch is connected via the A760 to the highway network which opens directly south to the A737. Already in the middle of the 19th century closed the Glasgow and South Western Railway Lochwinnoch with its own railway station on the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway to the rail network. Today it is operated by the Ayrshire Coast Line First ScotRail. The international airport of Glasgow than twelve kilometers to the northeast.
