The son of advokāts at the court of Leeuwarden January (Johann) Valckenaer Warner and his wife Susanna, daughter of the Walloon pastor Caspar Baux, was baptized on June 9, his birth year 1715 in the French church of his birthplace. He had the city school of his hometown visits, which was headed by the then Rector Georg Christoph Schooneveld. 1731, he began studying theology at the University of Franeker, where he enrolled in the matriculation of the College on June 15, 1831. After he had attended lectures in theology at Harm Venema (1697-1787), in the Oriental languages at Emo Lucius Vriemoet and in philosophy at Godefridus du Bois (1700-1747), he devoted himself to the classical languages under Tiberius Hemsterhuis and Peter Wesseling. Supposedly, he is said to have his doctorate in 1737 nor in Franeker, but the Franeker Promotion album recorded no such promotion.

On September 4, 1737, he enrolled at the University of Leiden, where he continued his language studies at Albert Schulten and undertook further studies at the local university library. After he had published some papers there, he returned - weakened health - 1739 to Friesland back and in 1740 vice-principal of the Latin school in Kampen. On June 17, 1741, he was appointed as the successor of Hemsterhuis professor of Greek language at the University of Franeker, which task he took on 9 October 1741 his inaugural address De Causis neglectae literarum Graecarum culturae ( Franeker 1741). In addition, the instructions to him were applied to Greek antiquities on September 2, 1755. In Franeker he was in 1745, 1750 and 1760 also rector of the Frisian Academy.

After Hemsterhuis 1765 was gone from his Leiden professorship, the curators of the Leiden University decided to call him on 18 October 1765 professor of Greek language, which task he with the inaugural De Publicis Atheniensium moribus took over on June 3, etc. in 1766. In addition, he received on December 14, 1768 an appointment as professor of national history, which chair he took over on 1 March 1769 the unpublished speech De virtutibus rebusque gestis gulielmi I foederatae huius Reipublicae fundatoris. Here he participated also at the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was 1771/72 Rector of the Alma Mater, which task he laid down with the speech de admir andis Divinae Providentiae rationibus in fundenda Foederatorum Belgarum libertate.
