Lodovico Castelvetro

Lodovico Castelvetro ( * ca 1505 in Modena, † 1571 in Chiavenna, Sondrio province ) was an Italian humanist.

Life

Castelvetro came from a good family and studied in Bologna, Ferrara and Padua, in order to devote himself exclusively in Siena literature. After a stay in Rome, he returned to Modena and was a teacher of law. Through a literary criticism of a text by Annibale Caro Castelvetro was drawn into a literary discussion, in which the Inquisition in Rome intervened. It was also accused of having translated Protestant texts. Ultimately Castelvetro was excommunicated as a heretic in 1557 and spent the rest of his life in exile, first in France, then in Vienna.

Work and impact

In Vienna Castelvetro worked out his edition of Aristotle's Poetics, in which he of the three units of the drama represented (the unit of time, place, and action ) a hedonistic conception of poetry and teaching. This Castelvetro exercised considerable influence on the normative poetics of the drama of the Renaissance and French Classicism. His confrontations with Annibale Caro on the vernacular were taken by Benedetto Varchi (L' Ercolano), a precursor of the Tuscan and Florentine linguistics.
