Lohsestraße (KVB)

Metro Station Lohsestraße is a station of the lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne city railway, all lines are operated by the Cologne Transport companies. It is the southernmost and the least frequented subway station in Nippeser tunnel and was built in 1974: the Nippeser tunnel together with the belt Elevated Railway, the zoo treks and the areas of Hansa Ring / Breslauer Platz / Hbf - Ebert place. It has two tracks. Weekdays hold almost 600 trains runs regularly at this station.

Location

The metro station is located on the southern branch of the district Nippes under the Neuss road between the confluence of the eponymous Lohse Street and the intersection of the interior canal road. The Neuss road is not only the main thoroughfare of the district knick-knacks, but also the main shopping street and a cultural meeting place in the neighborhood.

The Nippeser tunnel is linksrheinisch the most used route failure of the Cologne Stadtbahn. In addition to the lines 12 and 15 it is used daily for use trains to the Ford plants, and for trips to the street railway workshop Weidenpesch.

History

The station with its underground tunnel was created in 1974 and opened. Previously, the now underground route traveled by Ebert space direction Weidenpesch was operated as a streetcar line since 1882, the street railway workshop since about 1930 were the route already a line overarching importance. This is unchanged to this day, because at the Cologne Stadtbahn technically no distinction is made between the vehicles traveling as subway and those who go down as the tram. All vehicles must KVB into street railway workshop in Weidenpesch. At the southern end of the station originally the Cologne city highway should still be created, which is supported by some intermediate consumption bill, see also point architecture. The highway was never built and the plans have been discarded.

Architecture

The metro station is designed as a through station in Nippeser tunnel with two storeys. In the upper underground floor at the two outputs in the north are built distribution levels as in the south of the platforms in which information centers and kiosks are located. Purpose of distribution levels is to allow the passenger the choice of the direction of the platform, regardless of which side it comes from. As a second underground floor of the platforms of the Nippeser tunnels are created, on this the trains of the lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne Stadtbahn on two side platforms. These are designed with 90 m length for triple traction and consist entirely of the original 35 cm low-floor platforms. The platforms are unchanged today, the walls are tiled in the style of the 1970s in the green and yellow. There are escalators between distribution levels and platforms as well as the distribution levels of the street. During construction of the station, especially at the outputs at their south side you went on the assumption that at its end to the interior channel road towards the partly underground or to be applied in trough position Cologne city highway should cross the tunnel. This is also the reason for the southern outputs that end in the green areas of the Cologne green belt. Further, there are in the tunnel static inputs in terms of the city highway. The reasons for the relatively large distance from the Agnesviertel and the previous station Ebert space can be found in the plans to the city highway.

Weak points of the station

  • For Cologne conditions, the Stations of the Nippeser tunnels are built in widely spaced; that means some relatively long paths for passengers. This is partly due to the then planning for the construction of the Cologne city highway, see also point architecture.
  • Since the separation of the Cologne Stadtbahn network in high-floor and low-floor line 2003 there is of this much-used station no direct link more to the subway station Dom / Hauptbahnhof or the other stations of Cologne city center tunnel, although the passenger flows actually exactly require this connection.
  • Due to decades of operation with classic tram vehicles, the platforms were all originally created as a low-floor platforms, but with preliminary work for future expansion on high-floor level. In the underground platforms reason it is important to from the escalator to 90 cm in height, from there runs a small ramp to the actual platform down. The fixed stairs on the other hand close correctly to the platform.
