Lojsta Castle

The Castle of Lojsta (Swedish Lojsta Slott ) is a ruined castle in the parish ( swedish socks ) Stånga on the Swedish island of Gotland. The Castle of Lojsta, unlike the name suggests, not a castle or a castle in the strict sense. In the Middle Ages the castle of Lojsta was a defense system, which was on an island in a small lake in the middle of the Swedish island of Gotland. It is believed that the fortress was used by the Vitalienbrüderm who supported the former captive Swedish king Albrecht IV of Mecklenburg. The Vitali brothers were pirates who took advantage of Gotland as their base. In 1404 they were defeated and forced to abandon the castle of Lojsta and its other two vertices on Gotland by the Teutonic Knights.

Today is obtained from this fortress, not much. At the beginning of the 20th century, archaeologists examined the area, but their theories are questioned today, for example on home foundations in the fortress. The buildings were probably built of wood; Today it is found no trace above ground.

The fort was surrounded by a dug ditch which separated together with a dam and a palisade the inner courtyard of the fortress from the outside. Today, the water level of the lake is about 2.5 meters lower than in the Middle Ages, and the lake is divided into three smaller ones. When the fort was in use, it had a drawbridge to the mainland, from the remnants can be seen. Today the remains of the fort can be reached by land.
