London and Zurich Agreements

The Zurich and London Agreements were on 19 February 1959 between the Turkey, Greece, the United Kingdom and the Cypriots, under the leadership of Archbishop Makarios III. and Fazıl Küçük closed at Lancaster House in London and regulated, inter alia, constitutional issues in the transition of the former British colony of Cyprus to the independent Republic of Cyprus. Great Britain, Greece and Turkey acted to as protecting powers of the newly formed state.

, Agreements Negotiations on the constituent part contracts, declarations of these agreements had been entered into on February 11, 1959 in Zurich.

The Zurich and London agreements consist of the following contracts, agreements and declarations:

  • Agreement on the basic structure of the Republic of Cyprus
  • Treaty establishing Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom as guarantor powers
  • Treaty of Alliance between Cyprus, Greece and Turkey
  • Declaration of the United Kingdom on February 17, 1959 relates to military bases on a Akrotiri, Episkopi, Paramali and b. Dhekelia, Pergamos, Ayios Nikolaos, Xylophagou. These areas remain under full British sovereignty.
  • Affirmative declarations of Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey to the declaration of the United Kingdom
  • Affirmative declaration of the representatives of the Greek Cypriots ( Makarios III. ) to all parts of the Zurich and London Agreement
  • Affirmative declaration of the representatives of the Turkish Cypriots ( Fazıl Küçük ) to all parts of the Zurich and London Agreement
  • Agreed measures to prepare for the new regulations in Cyprus

After signing these agreements, the preparatory phase began, which ended in August 1960. In the elections on 13 December 1959, Makarios III. elected President and Vice-President Küçük Fazıl.
