The Long March 4A is largely identical to the Long March 3C. It has the same first and second stage, but has a more modern third stage liquid propellant ( UDMH and nitrogen tetroxide ) and swiveling engines. The development of the missile by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology began in 1978. It has been used only twice and was designed for transport in sun-synchronous polar orbit and. The first flight took place on September 7, 1988, with China's first weather satellite Feng Yun of experimental 1A was transported into space. In the second and last start on 3rd September 1990 then Feng Yun 1B was launched. After which it was replaced by the CZ- 4B.

When CZ 4B an enhanced third- stage and two different payload fairings was used. This had a length of 4.91 meters and 2.90 meters in diameter or 8.48 meters length and 3.35 meters in diameter. The first flight took place on May 10, 1999 Feng Yun 1C and Shi Jian 5 on board.

In the CZ -4C reignitable a third stage, altered levels adapter and a large payload fairing is used. My first flight took place on 26 April 2006, where she brought the satellite Yaogan Weixing -1 into orbit.
