History

In the 1950s occurred in the American Whippet Kennel Wind Sprite by Walter A. Wheeler Jr. long-haired dogs. These were first registered by the competent governing body, the AKC as a purebred Whippets. However, the American Whippet Club ( AWC) in 1982 led an investigation which came to the conclusion that the long-haired dogs were created by crossing Shelties, as has been shown in them the MDR1 defect which does not occur in Whippets. The addresses registered as Whippets long-haired dogs were removed from the AKC from the stud book and apply from the perspective of AKC and AWC since then as hybrids.

Even before the cancellation of his dogs from the stud book of the AKC Wheeler founded in 1981 together with like-minded Longhaired Whippet Association the (LWA ), which in 1986 published a standard. The first dogs came to Europe in 1987. In the U.S. In 1987, a breeder crossed some Longhaired Whippets in their Borzoi lines a. This new variety was first Silken Wind Sprite named by her until her this naming was prohibited by the LWA. 1998 got this race the name Silken Wind Hound.

1993 bought by a U.S. breeder Longhaired Whippets six in the LWA and thus formed the basis for the later creation, the International Longhaired Whippet Club ( ILWC ). The mid-90s were introduced due to a small gene pool not AKC registered Whippets with in this breed. 2001 International Longhaired Whippet Club was officially founded. The breed standard of the ILWC differs slightly from the breed standard of the LWA.

In 2002, a breeder imported several acquired by ILWC breeders dogs to Germany. Followed in 2004, from this the foundation of the Silken Wind Sprite Club (SWC ). The SWC used for the breed the name " Silken Wind Sprite ". The German translation of the ILWC - breed standards soaked in the dimension slightly from the original ILWC.

Due to the introgression of Shelties of MDR1 is found in the breed. The allele frequency in a sample of 89 dogs was 46.1 percent. Among the tested dogs 51.7 percent were heterozygous for the defective allele, 15.7 percent had two defective alleles. In addition, cases of Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA ) are described, which are probably also due to the genetic history of the breed explainable.
