Lonnie Hillyer

Lonnie Hillyer ( born March 25, 1940 in Monroe (Georgia ); † 1 July 1985 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter.

Hillyer began at the age of 14 at the Detroit pianist Barry Harris. In 1960 he moved to New York, took with Yusef Lateef on and joined the group of Charles Mingus at, with whom he worked more than 10 years, among others. solo heard on the Big band album Let My Children Hear Music of 1971 and the concert recording of Charles Mingus and Friends in Concert from 1972. Together with saxophonist Charles McPherson, whom he had met in Detroit, he led a quintet with which he also recorded.

Hillyer died of cancer, leaving behind his wife Maxine, his son, Lonnie Hillyer Darryl ( who works as a bass guitarist in the rock genre ), and his daughter, Hadiya.
