LORAN-C transmitter Rantum

The LORAN - C transmitter at Rantum Rantum on Sylt is the only transmitter for the LORAN-C radio navigation system in Germany.

History and construction

The LORAN - C transmitter Rantum was taken at the beginning of the 1960s in operation and used until the mid- 1990s, a capacitively extended, insulated against ground, guyed steel lattice mast of 190 m height. 1996, the mast was replaced by a similar but more stable redesign of 193 m height. The new LORAN -C transmitter mast Rantum is like its predecessor isolated from earth and capacitive screen electrically extended by ropes. It weighs 72 tonnes and is in four levels at 60.52 m, 120.87 m, 154.95 m and 190 m guyed. It has a power output of 250 kW, and transmits on the frequency 100 kHz.
