Lord Burgess
Irving Louis Burgie, better known as Lord Burgess ( born July 28, 1924 Brooklyn, New York ) is an American composer.
Life and work
Burgies mother came from Barbados and his father from the U.S. state of Virginia. In 1956 he married Elizabeth Turner ( born May 31, 1930; † 28 June 2003). The couple had two sons, Irving Jr. and Andrew.
His most famous work is probably the song " Jamaica Farewell ", to which he contributed the verses. It was recorded by Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett, Carly Simon and others. More composed by him, and through Belafonte made known songs include " Day-O " and " Iceland in the Sun".
Burgie composed the musical Ballad for Bimshire, the Mayfair Theatre ( Off- Broadway) on 15 October 1963 had premiere.
Irving Burgie has also written the verses of the National Anthem was adopted in 1966 from Barbados.
