Lord Invader

Lord Invader ( born 1915 in San Fernando, Trinidad, † 15 October 1961, in New York, real name Rupert Westmore Grant) was a composer and singer of Calypso.

Life

Lord Invader became active in the 1930s as a Calypso singer. His biggest hit was Rum and Coca -Cola, whose text he had written. He took over to a native of the 1906 tune composed by Lionel Belasco of the title L' Anee passée ( German: "Last year "). Then, when the comedian Morey Amsterdam came to the troops, American soldiers in September 1943 to Trinidad, he seized on the island- known song and let him enroll in the U.S. under his name to copyright. The Andrews Sisters celebrated with Rum and Coca -Cola in 1945 a worldwide hit. In the subsequent court proceedings to the copyrights the version of the Andrews Sisters was classified as plagiarism, so Lord Invader and Lionel Belasco were awarded a compensation. However, the other participants were allowed to continue to be mentioned as a composer.

During the 2-year duration of the process itself " Lord Invader" held often in New York, and so there is a live recording from the Town Hall ( 123 W 43rd St ), New York City, 21 December 1946 Directed by Alan Lomax. A total of 22 items (apart from the introduction ) also contain Lord Invaders version of Rum and Coca -Cola, available on the CD Calypso At Midnight, published on 15 November 1999 at Rounder Records.
