Losheng-Sanatorium

The Losheng Sanatorium (乐 生 疗养院Chinese, Pinyin Lesheng Liáoyǎngyuàn ) is a hospital for lepers in Taiwan. The building complex is located in Xinzhuang District of the city of New Taipei City. The name Losheng (乐 生) means " happy life ".

The hospital was established in the 1930s during the period of Japanese rule over Taiwan for the isolation and medical treatment of lepers. It was the first public sanatorium for lepers ( leprosy hospital and first ever) in Taiwan. From 1934 until the withdrawal of the Japanese in 1945 lepers were there forcibly confined in quarantine.

Following the expansion of the Metro network from Taipei ( MRT) were planning the authorities to demolish the sanatorium in 2001, to make way for a subway depot. After strong protests by students, urban planners, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations, the grounds of the sanatorium in 2009 was made as a cultural landscape under protection, thus preventing the demolition.
