Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway

The Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway was a British railway company in Cornwall in England.

History

The Company was incorporated on June 30, 1862, to build a 6.8 km long railway line from Lostwithiel by Carne Point at Fowey in the broad gauge of 2140 mm. Construction began in June 1863 and completion was scheduled for September 1864. The line was finally opened on 1 June 1869. Haupttransportgut was kaolinite. In Losthwithiel there was a transition to the Cornwall Railway. Since the operation of the route by the Cornwall Railway was too expensive, this was carried out in 1870 with its own locomotive.

The company tried to gain an advantage in a price war with the rival Cornwall Minerals Railway ( CMR). This failed and the company introduced on 1 January 1880 the operation. In the period following the route to the Cornwall Railway was leased, which she used as siding. The CMR took over on June 27, 1892, the track that was re- opened on 16 September 1895 in standard gauge.
