The Canary or Fenugreek Fenugreek Berthelot ( Lotus berthelotii ) is a species of the subfamily of the Fabaceae ( Faboideae ). It is native to Tenerife. In Central Europe, this plant is used as bedding and balcony plant for the summer.

Description

The Canary Fenugreek is a prostrate or creeping, evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant and is sometimes classified as a subshrub. The vegetative plant parts are gray. It reaches heights of growth of up to 20 cm. The long stem axis often cover large areas. The small leaves are silver gray.

The numerous flowers appear singly or in pairs from April to May The orange -red to scarlet flowers reminiscent in form and color to crab claws.

System

Lotus berthelotii was first described in 1881 by Ramón y Masferrer Arquimbau. Their scientific name honors the French naturalist and ethnologist Sabin Berthelot.
