Louis Aloysius, Prince of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Bartenstein

Louis Aloysius, Prince of Hohenlohe- Waldenburg - Bartenstein ( born August 18, 1765 in Bartenstein, † May 30 1829 in Lünstadt, today Luneville ), was a German prince of the empire and general and Marshal of France.

Hohenlohe joined in 1792 as a colonel in the French army emigrants and campaigned for the same regiment to Hohenlohe, with whom he particularly distinguished himself on the Weißenburger lines during a storm. He stepped on it in Dutch services and led with his regiment, almost surrounded, in 1794 a masterly retreat from the island of Bommel behind the Waal. Later he took, now in the Austrian service, in the campaigns of 1794 to 1798 as a colonel and part of 1799 as a major general under the Archduke Charles. He came as a Brigadier to Klagenfurt. On 20 Februar1806 he was Feldmarschalleutnant and left the army for a short time until the war broke out in October 1806. He came therefore as a divisional commander in Bohemia, in 1807 to Bratislava and became governor of Galicia. In October 1815 he was awarded the Infantry Regiment No. 41, which he made in 1817.

After the restoration of the Bourbons in 1814 he joined on 17 July 1816 in French military service, was Lieutenant General and was awarded the Luneville castle as a gift. He was commander of the German Legion, whose colonel was the prince. The regiment was named after him later. In 1823, the Prince commanded the army, which led the Duke of Angouleme to Spain, in 1827 the king appointed him Marshal of France. On November 5, 1827 he was at the request of the Minister Villèle peer of France.

He died on 30 May 1829 in Luneville.

Members of the Regiment Hohenlohe, were French citizens, France had to leave or changed over into the French Foreign Legion. The Foreign Legion, established in 1831, provides this regiment as historical predecessors.

Family

He was the son of Louis Leopold Franz Leopold Hohenlohe- Bartenstein (* November 15, 1731, † June 14, 1799 ) and his wife Countess Polyxena von Limburg- Stirum ( born October 28, 1738 † February 26, 1798 ). He was married twice. His first wife was born on November 18, 1786 Countess Wilhelmina Augusta Franziska von Manderscheid - Blankenheim ( * March 13, 1770; † August 26, 1789 ). The couple had the following son:

  • Karl August Theodor ( born June 9, 1788 † August 12, 1844 ) ∞ September 9, 1811 Landgrave of Hesse- Rotenburg Clotilde ( born September 12, 1787; † January 6, 1869 )

His second wife was born on January 19, 1790 Maria Creszentia ( born 29 August 1768, † April 4, 1826 ) of Salm- Reifferscheidt. The couple had the following children:

  • Augusta Charlotte ( born November 16, 1793)

The government of his country, he had ceded to his son Karl August Theodor in November 1806.
