Louis Gabriel Suchet

Louis Gabriel Suchet ( born March 2, 1770 in Lyon, † January 3, 1826 in Marseille) was a French marshal, who was appointed by Napoleon to the Duke of Albufera.

Life

Suchet appeared in 1792 as a volunteer in the Lyon National Guard one, fought in 1794 and 1795 in Italy, La Harpe, was 1797 Brigadier General, then chief of staff under Guillaume -Marie- Anne Brune and commanded since 1798 as a major general in Switzerland. In June 1800, he became commander of Genoa and took over in December the command of the center of the army in Italy. After the Peace of Luneville 1801 Suchet was appointed inspector general of infantry, and received in 1803 a division in the camp of Boulogne. In the campaigns of 1805 ( against Austria ), 1806 ( against Prussia ) and 1807 ( against Russia), his Division, the first of the 5th Corps under Lannes drew from many.

After the peace of Tilsit Suchet commanded the 5th Corps in Silesia and led it towards the end of 1808 to Spain, where he covered the right bank of the Ebro during the Siege of Saragossa ( 1809). After the fall of the city he was raised to the rank of count and took over in April 1809 the command of the army of Aragon; He won at Mavia, Belchite and Lerida and conquered Tortosa and Tarragona on 28 June 1811 by which he gained a marshal's baton.

On October 25, 1811, he struck Joaquin Blake at Murviedro, took the following day against the surrender of the fort and captured on January 9, 1812 Valencia, for which he received the title of duke ( Albufera is called a fish- rich lagoon in Valencia). After he had gone back over the Pyrenees early 1814, he said from his headquarters Narbonne April 14, 1814, the recognition of Louis XVIII. and concluded a truce with Wellington. He submitted to Louis XVIII. and subsequently received the peerage and a seat in the House of Lords.

On the return of Napoleon from Elba I. Suchet is closed at this again and was in command of the army transferred Alps; he entered on June 14, 1814 in Savoy, but was thrown back by the Austrians.

When Louis XVIII. Return, he lost his peerage, but received it back in 1819.

Louis Gabriel Suchet died on January 3, 1826 in Marseille.

His Mémoires sur les en Espagne depuis 1808 campagnes jusqu'en 1814 ( 2nd edition, Par 1834, 2 vols ), published his chief of staff, Saint- Cyr- Nuguas.

Suchet's son, Napoléon Suchet, Duke of Albufera (* May 23, 1813; † July 23, 1877 in Paris) was from 1852 to 1870 a member of the legislative body.

Honors

His name is inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in the 33 column. In Lyon, a monument is erected.
