Louis Petit de Julleville

Louis Petit de Julleville ( born July 18, 1841 in Paris, † August 25, 1900 ) was a French linguist, medievalist and literary scholar.

Life and work

Louis Augustin Julien Petit de Julleville occurred in 1860 in the École Normale Supérieure one, was in 1863 and his habilitation in 1868 Agrégation with the two theses Quomodo Graeciam tragici poetae Graeci descripserint and L' Ecole d' Athènes au IV ° siècle après Jésus-Christ. He was professor of rhetoric at the Collège Stanislas in Paris and professor at the Universities of Nancy and Dijon. In 1886 he was appointed professor at the Sorbonne to the chair of the history of French literature of the Middle Ages and history of the French language. Its name combines especially with the Histoire de la langue et de la littérature française des origines à 1900 in eight volumes (Paris 1896-1899-1925, Nendeln 1975), for Ferdinand Brunot 800 pages contributed language history, in anticipation of his own large Histoire de la langue française.

Louis Petit de Julleville was the father of Cardinal Pierre Petit de Julleville (1876-1947) and father of the historian Jean Guiraud ( 1866-1953 ).
