Louis Philippe Leopold was the first son of Leopold I, King of the Belgians (1790-1865) from his second marriage to Princess Louise d' Orléans. He was the first Belgian Prince at all. The standard for the Belgian Crown Prince title of " Duke of Brabant" was created, however, until 1840 for his brother Leopold. In addition to the name of his father he received at baptism in the Brussels Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula by Engelbert Sterckx also the name of his grandfather, the French King Louis Philippe.

The Prince died before reaching his first birthday from an inflammation of the oral mucosa. He was initially buried in the tomb of the dukes of Brabant in the St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral in Brussels, later his remains were reburied at the side of his parents in the Laeken Church of Our Lady.

After the death of the crown prince whose father tried to designate because of the absence of a presumptive heir, one of his nephews Coburg heir to the throne, but was vetoed by the Belgian guarantor powers.
