Louis Philippe I, Duke of Orléans

Louis-Philippe I, Duke of Orléans ( French Louis Philippe de Bourbon, duc d' Orléans, born May 12, 1725 in Versailles, France, † November 18, 1785 at Castle Sainte- Assise -en- Brie ) was a member of the French royal family of the House of Bourbon - Orléans.

Life

Louis Philippe was the only son of Duke Louis I of Orléans and Auguste Marie Johanna of Baden -Baden. He was born in Versailles and received the title of Duke of Chartres and wore this title until the death of his father, after which he succeeded him in 1752 as Duke of Orléans.

During service in the French armies, he distinguished himself in the campaigns of 1742, 1743 and 1744 and at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745. After his retirement to Bagnolet in 1757, he worked on theatrical performances. He died in St. Assise.

The Duke married in 1743 Princess Louise Henriette de Bourbon -Conti, who bore him a son, Philippe Egalite, Duke of Orléans, and a daughter, who married the last Duke of Bourbon.

His second wife, Charlotte -Jeanne de la Haye de Riou Béraud, Marquise de Montesson, whom he married secretly in a morganatic marriage in 1773, was a wise woman and a very respected author. 1777 she invited, Chevalier de Saint -Georges to take a Joseph Bologne in her Paris apartment a.
