Louise Moillon

Moillon Louise (* 1610 in Paris, † 1696 ibid ) was a French painter. It is one of the most famous French still life painters of the 17th century.

Life

Louise Moillon comes from a Huguenot family and grew up in an era marked by art and painting area in Paris. She was the daughter of the painter Nicolas Moillon (1555-1619), a portrait and landscape painter, who also gave her the first lessons in painting. Her brother, Isaac Moillon also one of the most famous French painters of that time. Louise's father died when she was 10 years old, her mother married a Protestant artists, the still-life painter and picture dealer François Garnier in second marriage again. Louise sat with him continued her artistic education and was able to sell her first still life before the age of 20.

1641 she married the wealthy timber merchant Etienne Girardot de Chan -court, who came from a Huguenot family coming from Burgundy. The persecution of the French Protestants after the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685 also met Louise Moillon and her family. Her husband was arrested, two of her children fled into exile in England. Louise Moillon died in 1696 at the age of 86 years.

Work

Most of the works of Louise Moillon are before their marriage in the years 1630 - 1640 emerged. She painted baskets and plates with fruits and vegetables, vases with flowers, still lifes with human figures, such as " La marchande de fruits et de légumes " 1630 (Louvre). Her paintings are characterized by a quiet aesthetics and by an artful design that is based on accurate observation. About 40 of her works are still known today, many are exhibited in major art museums.
