Loussios

The Lousios Gorge is located near the village of Dimitsana in the province Gortynia, Arcadia on the Peloponnese (Greece ) a gorge. The Lousios Canyon was formed by the river of the same Lousios, a tributary of the Alfios. It has a length of approximately 5,000 meters and runs in a north -south direction. Through the gorge, a well -developed and popular hiking trail. At the upper end of the gorge is the village of Dimitsana. At the lower end of the gorge the ancient Gortyn is with a public Asklepios sanctuary. The inputs of the gorge can be reached on foot or by car via switchbacks. At Gortyn at the southern entrance leads to branch off from the road Elle Niko Stemnitsa.

A special feature is the built into the rock walls of the gorge monasteries Prodromou and Philosophou (old and new). The data obtained from the Ottoman period manuscripts and scrolls are now kept in the museum in Dimitsana. The old Philosophou monastery in the rock wall (see the photo ) was directly in favor of the new abandoned (same photo and standing next to, buildings on the right Outcrop ). The monasteries Prodromou and Philosophou ( new) are also inhabited by monks. Visitors are welcome in compliance with the dress code.
