Louveciennes

Louveciennes is a French small town with 7186 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) about 20 km west of Paris. It is located in the department of Yvelines, whose capital is Versailles.

History

Originally Louveciennes was a small village on the banks of the Seine with fruit and wine. In the 17th century was built the Aqueduct of Louveciennes after laying of the court of Louis XIV at Versailles. Louveciennes was still called Lucienne and was first mentioned in the 18th century Louvetienne. In the 19th century the village was known for its painters, such as Pissarro and Sisley. Since the train ride from Paris estates and second homes are increasingly related.

Attractions

The Aqueduct of Louveciennes (also aqueduct of Marly ) was built from 1681 to 1685 by Jules Hardouin -Mansart and Robert de Cotte, to supply the Palace of Versailles and Chateau Marly- le -Roi with water from the Seine. The aqueduct itself is 640 m long and 23 m high and directs the water into the water reservoir of Marly.

There are several castles from the 17th and 18th centuries ( Voisins Castle, castle of Madame du Barry, Castle Pont, Chateau du Parc, Chateau des Sources ).

  • Railway: From Paris ( Saint- Lazare ) train to Saint- Nom- la- Bretèche.
  • By car: A 13 motorway, then RN 186 towards the north ( Port- Marly, Saint- Germain -en- Laye ). In the east-west direction the community is traversed by the D 102 (route Departmental ).

  • Alfred Sisley (1839-1899), landscape painter, lived in the village of Voisins 1870-1874.
  • Kurt Weill (1900-1950), the composer of The Threepenny Opera lived in Berlin until 1933 and found refuge in Voisins from 1933 to 1935.
  • Charles- Camille Saint- Saens (1835-1921), organist and composer, lived in the village of Voisins 1865-1870.
  • Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Impressionist, lived in the village of Voisins 1869-1870.
  • Madame du Barry (1743-1793), mistress of Louis XV. , Lived in the pavilion of Eaux and advanced him to the castle.
  • Joseph Joffre (1852-1931), French general and member of the Académie française, had his retirement home in Louveciennes.
