It is also sung to the traditional Irish melody Garton.

William Studwell describes the poem as simple, direct and sincere ( " simple, direct and sincere " ), noting that it was a rare example of a Carol, which have overcome the disadvantage of "not having a tune (or two or three ) Which Has caught the imagination of holiday audiences ".

Text

Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love Divine; Love was born at Christmas, Star and angels gave the sign. Worship we the Godhead, Love Incarnate, Love Divine; Worship we our Jesus: But wherewith for sacred sign? Love Shall be our token, Love Shall be yours and love be mine, Love to God and all men, Love for plea and gift and sign.

Love Came for Christmas, Love all lovely, love divine, Love was born at Christmas, Star and angels gave the sign. Prices we God, Incarnate love, divine love, Let us pray to our Jesus, But what a sacred sign? Love shall be our characters, Love them shall be thine, and be my love, The love of God and all people, Love for plea and gift and sign.
