Lower Zambezi National Park

The Lower - Zambezi National Park is situated on the Zambian River from Zimbabwe Mana Pools National Park in Zambia on the middle reaches of the Zambezi River between Kariba Dam and the mouth of the Luangwa just above the Cahora Bassa lake.

The park covers 4092 km ² and is developed as a little, even though he has lots of lodges and camps and tours in car and boat. The area next to the immediate floodplain of the river is so mountainous that its development with roadways is almost impossible and it insurmountable for animals. The animal population of the park is great, but not as varied as in the South Luangwa National Park.

The park can be reached via the Zambian Chirundu. A visit is recommended for the dry season. All-wheel drive and high ground clearance are essential.

Landscape

The landscape is dominated by the changing water level of the Zambezi. There are shorelines, islands, sandbanks and pools. Drier areas are covered by a forest of mahogany, ebony, baobab and wild figs. The river and the flood plain bounded by steep cliffs.

Wildlife

Since the permanent water-carrying pools are the only source of water for miles around in the dry season many animals congregate here. The area is therefore popular for observation of large animals. These include African Elephant, African buffalo, leopard and cheetah. Many Nile crocodiles and hippos the desiccating summer Zambezi retire to the few remaining water bodies.
