Luarca

Luarca ( Asturian Ḷḷuarca ) is the capital of the Spanish municipality of Valdés in the west of the autonomous community of Asturias. The town has 5,279 inhabitants ( as of 2011) and an area of 5.84 km ².

Location

Luarca is located on the Costa Verde, a portion of the northwestern Spanish Atlantic coast, halfway between Gijón and the border with Galicia. The place has a sports and fishing port.

Business & Tourism

In addition to the fishing port, the economic focus of the city is tourism today. The majority of visitors comes from Spain. The city offers a wide selection of traditional shops and restaurants, both in the center and in the immediate surroundings. And the beach area is very busy during the summer.

In Luarca, the company Grupo ALSA was founded in 1923.

When the storm surge in 2014 in Asturias, a large part of the Maritime Museum Aula del Mar was destroyed, below that is the most important collection of giant squid.
