Lubomír Štrougal

Lubomir Strougal (* October 19, 1924 in Veseli nad Lužnicí ) is a former communist official and politician Czechoslovakia.

Biography

Strougal studied from 1945 to 1949 Law at the Charles University in Prague. Already during his studies he was in the 1948 employees of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSC ).

He was 1957-1959 First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia Regional Committee Budweis. In 1958 he became a member, and between 1965 and 1970 Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.

1959 Strougal was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management. In 1961, he joined the Government Viliam Široký III the department and took over the Interior Ministry until 1965. As interior minister Strougal prevented 1964-1965 investigations in the years 1948 and 1949 were carried out crimes of the security forces, including the murder of three political prisoners.

After the election, Ludvik Svoboda elected president Strougal practiced from April 1968 to 1970 from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and was until 1969 Chairman of the Economic Council of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Strougal was 1970-1988 Prime Minister of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

The invasion of the Warsaw Pact forces to crush the Prague Spring was Strougal hostile towards. In the following years he took a position of the normalization of relations with the Eastern Bloc countries. As prime minister, was the pragmatist Strougal as a counterpoint to the ideological hardliners, Gustav Husak. In October 1988 he resigned after internal party differences with Miloš Jakeš by the Office of the Prime Minister. He was replaced by Ladislav Adamec.

Strougal withdrew completely from politics and managed the lonely homestead Na Kobyle ( Kobel hut) in Kořenov in the Jizera Mountains.

After the political changes Strougal was indicted for obstruction of justice and abuse of office during his time as Minister of the Interior of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The case against it ended in July 2002 with an acquittal for lack of evidence. He is the highest politicians in the former Czechoslovakia, was raised against the prosecution.
