Lucani (ancient people)

The Lucanians (sometimes called Lucanians ) is an Italic people with Oscan language which is located in the 5th century BC, between the rivers Sele, Brandano, Lao and Crati. The country is named after them called Lucania and roughly corresponds to today's Basilicata. In the course of the 4th century BC they expanded their territory in the south- west into what is now Calabria. This resulted in conflicts with the large Greek cities like Syracuse and Tarentum. In the following period they fell under the sway of Rome since the 3rd century BC, they were under Roman rule, since the 1st century BC they were finally Romanized.
