Sele (river)

The Sele ( formerly called Silarus ) is a river in southwestern Italy.

Geography

The Sele rises in Monte Paflagone in the city Caposele in southern Italy. Caposele located in the province of Avellino. The further course leads mainly through Campania, to be more precise the river empties into the Mediterranean finally at Paestum, in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Hydrology

The water of the Sele comes in part from the source Monte Paflagone. Furthermore, the Tanagro, drains the Vallo di Diano, and the Calore Lucano, the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano rises in the northern part, in the Sele flows. The average amount of water of the river is 69 cubic meters per second.

History

The river Sele was called in ancient times Silarus. In the Roman Empire, the river was an important transportation flow. Notoriety of Silarus came in the Punic War because of the Battle of the Silarus. Later in Spartacusaufstand Spartacus fell in pitched battle in Lucania against the Romans.
