The history of the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu starts in 1940. At this time the University of Cluj ( Cluj) sought a refuge in this region. The reason for this was the Second Vienna Award, was forced by Romania to cede Northern Transylvania to Hungary.

In 1969, the University of Cluj founded in Sibiu ( Sibiu), the Faculty of History. This was converted in 1971 to the faculty of languages ​​and history. The Department of Languages ​​at that time consisted of courses for German, English and Romanian. In the same year, the Faculty of Public Administration was established. In 1972, the University of Kronstadt ( Braşov ) founded the Department of Wood Processing a branch in Sibiu.

On March 5, 1990, the Ministry of National Education issued a decree establishing the University of Sibiu, consisting of the faculties: literature, history and law, medicine, food and textile processing as well as science and engineering. 1991, was added at the Faculty of Theology.

On 12 May 1995, the University of Sibiu devoted its name to the Romanian writer and philosopher Lucian Blaga. In 2005, the Lucian Blaga University had 10 faculties and a department for distance learning.

The engineering faculty is named after the Sibiu Hermann Oberth. The Faculty of Law is named Simion Bărnuţiu, the Faculty of History and Heritage of the Nicolae Lupu. Namesake for the medical school is Victor Papilian, for the Faculty of Theology Andrei Şaguna.
