Lucius Aemilius Paullus (consul 1)

Lucius Aemilius Paullus was a Roman politician and senator.

Paullus was a son of Paullus Aemilius Lepidus, consul in 34 BC Because of his marriage with the younger Julia, a granddaughter of Augustus, he had good relations with the imperial house. This is probably why he held in the year 1 AD, together with his brother, Augustus ' adopted son and designated successor Gaius Caesar, the consulate.

About his future is discussed controversially in the research. In this case, the prevailing opinion that Paullus was soon dropped in favor of Augustus and executed for high treason. Prior to this was probably a conspiracy in the year 8 AD, the Paullus said to have planned with his wife against Augustus, after their youngest brother Agrippa Postumus - the two older, adopted by Augustus as his successor brothers Gaius and Lucius Caesar had already died - had been exiled to the island Planasia. Due to the banishment of his brother Paullus himself apparently saw the political hopes betrayed that he had put into the marriage with the granddaughter of Augustus. On the other hand represents Ronald Syme considers that Paullus had not been executed, but only had to go into exile. He refers here to an inscription, Lucius Aemilius Paullus in which a is called Arvalbruder, which he equates with Paullus.
