Lucky Starr series

Lucky Starr is the hero of the same six-volume science fiction novel series by Isaac Asimov from the 50s of the 20th century. The series is known for the idea of force-field blade, which might have inspired the lightsabers in Star Wars.

Lucky Starr

David "Lucky" Starr is a member of the Science Council and is usually in secret. The Science Council is an organization that protects the earth and special rights over other instances (eg military ), but does not seek political power. Starr is an orphan whose parents were killed in an attack by space pirates on the way to Venus. He only came of it because his mother whisked him into an escape pod board. Starr was raised by friends of the family who are member of the Science itself. What meant that he also just this career, after studying biophysics, sought and the youngest councilor was.

In his first race on Mars he meets mysterious creatures that live inside of Mars as beings of pure energy. None of the human inhabitants of Mars knew that Mars was once inhabited already. From them he gets a mask with which he can build a protective shield around him and can not be seen - in this disguise he called " Space Ranger ". In the course of the novels of this shield is ( and alter ego ) but hardly used, as no longer occur on the Martian. In the same bet he also meets his future, diminutive companion John " Bigman " Jones who has an inferiority complex because of its size and is prone to violent outbursts when someone asks him about it.

Locations

The novels of the Lucky Starr series play in the solar system on each of the different planets (Mars, Venus ... ), it looks as if Isaac Asimov wanted to write for each planet its own novel; However, this was not realized. Here is the Lucky Starr series an exception to the other works of Asimov. Normally his novels never play either on the ground or on the fictional planet outside the solar system, but on other planets of the solar system.

Asimov goes at each venue one on the environmental conditions of the planet, as this was state of knowledge at that time. Thus he describes on Venus vast oceans and semi- intelligent life in it. However, he waives exaggerated representations and seeks to moderate descriptions. Thus, while it is on Mercury, due to its proximity to the sun, extremely hot, but Lucky finds no lakes of liquid metal.

Comparison with Captain Future

There are some amazing parallels to Captain Future apparent - the structure of the novels is very similar ( cliffhanger at the end of the chapter, suspense as detective novels with resolution at the end, etc. ) David Starr and Curtis Newton are both orphans, both paternal friends and partly use a pseudonym ( Captain Future / space Ranger ), the true identity (Curtis Newton ) at Captain Future is not secret.

In both the novel series, the planets are inhabited, with Isaac Asimov is scientifically realistic than Edmond Hamilton. Captain Future is a U.S. Pulp series of Edmond Hamilton, which appeared from 1940 to 1944.
