Lucy van Dael

Lucy van Dael ( born 1946 ) is a Dutch violinist.

Life and work

Already in Lucy van Daels family played music a dominant role, her grandfather was a pianist and organist with a penchant for the music of Gustav Mahler. Her parents gave her piano lessons at an early age. But her true love was the early chamber music and the violin, which she had heard in concerts. She studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. For their final exam, she played the more modern works on a normal violin, but the required solo sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach on a Baroque violin. After this test, a prominent member of the jury expressed thus: " Too bad that you continue to follow the path of the baroque interpretation, you are too much talent. "

In the early sixties, she became the youngest member of the newly founded " Netherlands Chamber Orchestra " under Szymon Goldberg. After one and a half years sought her orchestra colleague, cellist Jaap ter Linden with the harpsichordist and organist Ton Koopman, a violinist. It was the birth of the ensemble " Musica da camera ". She also received invitations to play music with the couple Gustav Leonhardt (harpsichord ) and Marie Leonhardt, the latter already had a great experience in historical performance practice on the baroque violin.

Other milestones was the acquaintance with Sigiswald Kuijken and his brothers Barthold Kuijken, Wieland Kuijken and, as well as Frans Brüggen, with whom she founded the Orchestra of the 18th Century and for eighteen years was leader.

Van Dael taught at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and by 2011 at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. She was a guest lecturer at Stanford, Berkeley, Tokyo and Sapporo, Basel, Melbourne, Oslo, Hamburg, London and Jakarta.

Countless recordings accompany their long career. For the past include the recordings of the sonatas for violin solo by Johann Sebastian Bach and the sonatas by Marco Uccellini with Bob van Asperen harpsichord, as well as one recording with Italian and English Sonatas with the ensemble " Bell'Arte Antiqua".

Van Dael was married to Anner Bylsma.
