Ludvig Munthe

Ludvig Munthe ( born March 11, 1841 in Årøy in Sogndal, Norway, † March 30, 1896 in Dusseldorf, German Empire ) was a Norwegian painter.

Life

Ludvig Munthe, the third of eight children of farmers Gerhard Munthe (1791-1878) and the Sigrid Urnæs (1811-1904), was a pupil of Franz Wilhelm Schiertz but came to the age of 20 for further training to Dusseldorf. From 1863 until his death in 1896 was Munthe member of the Düsseldorf artist association " paint box ".

In his time, he was next to Johan Christian Clausen Dahl and Hans Gude of the most famous Norwegian painter abroad. Its main motives were melancholy and moody autumn and winter landscapes and beach scenes with Fischer decoration.

Munthe was also a member of the Academy of Arts in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

On June 1, 1872 Munthe married in Dusseldorf Dutch Lene Wilhelmina Vlierboom ( born March 6, 1853 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, † February 20, 1901 in The Hague), the daughter of the owner Ary Vlierboom and Eva Schalkwyck. The couple had four children.
