Ludvík Kuba

Ludvik Kuba ( born April 16, 1863 in Poděbrady, † November 30, 1956 in Prague) was a Czech folklorist, writer, painter and friend of the Sorbs.

He was born as the second of 13 children of locksmith Ludvíka Cuba and his wife Anna, nee Mikovšková.

Cuba has studied among the Slavic peoples to learn their songs, dances, musical instrument and customs. In artistic and scientific way he has presented on paper and cloth and described documentary. The extensive collection Slovanstvo ve svých spěvech ( in 16 volumes ) testifies to his ethnographic work. A similar documentation should arise about the costumes and customs about what has been accomplished partly in the Five Books čtení o Lužici, čtení o Starém Srbsku, čtení o Makedonii, čtení o Dalmacii and čtení o Bosne a Hercegovine.

In his travels through Europe, he has sensitively observing the everyday life and experiences, the people and especially his models? listened. He made exactly with the social conditions and environments familiar. With its Bücherni Cesty za slovanskou písní, Zaschlá paleta and Křižem kražem slovanským světem he left behind a rich legacy. Often the sources a few years had dried out his notes and sketches, silenced the songs, dancing the dances to the end and forget the customs.

The Lausitz visited Cuba for the first time in 1886 and then three more times (1903, 1922 and 1923 ). He also took the opportunity for the portrayal of Sorbian personalities and created these paintings the foundation for a Sorbian gallery.

Cuba received in the Slavic countries, many awards and honors. In the Maćica Serbska he joined in 1887. This association named him an honorary member in 1923 and 1945 Domowina awarded him an honorary membership.
