Ludwig Edelstein

Ludwig Edelstein ( born April 23, 1902 in Berlin, † August 16 1965 in New York ) was a German -American classical philologist and historian of medicine.

He studied classical philology in 1921 at the University of Berlin under Hermann Diels, Werner Jaeger, Eduard Norden and since 1925 at the University of Heidelberg, where he was at Otto rainbow with the work " περὶ ἀέρων and the collection of the Hippocratic writings" doctorate in 1929. He then was an assistant at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Berlin, where he was habilitated and a lectureship in history of the exact sciences had in antiquity. In 1933 he was dismissed as a Jew and deprived him of teaching. In 1934 he emigrated via Italy to the United States. Here he first taught until 1947 at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, he was since 1947 a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, since 1948 at the University of California, Berkeley. When he refused the oath of loyalty in the McCarthy era, he had to leave Berkeley and went back in 1951 at Johns Hopkins University, since 1960 he taught at the Rockefeller University in New York as Professor of Classical Philosophy and History of Science.

Gemstone belonged to Henry E. Sigerist, Owsei Temkin and Erwin Heinz plowman of the leading German historians of medicine who emigrated in the period of National Socialism in the United States. The emigration was a major loss of quality for the medical theoretical German research because of Hippokratismus the 1920s, in which physicians had called very strongly to an excessive figure of Hippocrates to solve current problems in medicine, had led to a stable institutionalization of medical history.
