Lugdunam ( from the Latin " Lugdunum " Lyon ) is the most potent previously known sweetener. It has a sweetening power that lies between 220,000 and 300,000 times that of sugar (sucrose). Lugdunam was developed in 1996 by chemists from the University of Lyon. It belongs to the family of sweetener Guanidincarbonsäuren, derivatives of guanidine with an acetic acid residue.

Further derivatives of this sweetener family are:

  • Carrelam ( 200,000 times sweeter )
  • Sucrononat ( 200,000 times sweeter )
  • Bernardam ( 188,000 times sweeter )
  • Sucrodiphenat ( 170,000 times sweeter )
  • Sucrooctat ( 162,000 times sweeter )
