Lugii

The Lugier (deprecated Lygier, latin Lugii ) were an East Germanic tribal group. In the 1st century AD they moved about in the area of today's Silesia.

The Lugier settled in Silesia along the Oder and in the adjacent room. The ancient Greek historian and geographer Strabo refers to the Lugier as a great nation, which comprised several tribes. The Roman historian Tacitus mentions in his work Germania ethnographic peoples as part of the " lugischen Group" Harier, Helvekonen, Manimer, Helisier and Nahanarvaler, on whose territory the lugische community of worship a sacred grove entertained. As northern neighbors Tacitus mentions the Gotonen. Claudius Ptolemy mentions in his instructions only three geographical subgroups of Lugier that Iomannoi, Idounoi and Bouroi ( German Boer ).

Is relatively little known about the actual history of the Lugier. According to Strabo the Lugier should have at times belongs to the realm of Maroboduus, who had built an empire in the space of Bohemia. Economically important was the amber trade, which also aroused desires. Middle of the 1st century AD in Bohemian region broke the rule of Vannius. The Lugier to have played a certain role, they were well supported by the Romans there. This supported any case the Lugier in 92 in the clashes with the Marcomanni. The knowledge of later authors on the Lugier was apparently limited, so that various false attributions are to be assumed, as in the late antique historian Zosimus, which is not always reliable anyway.

In research, it is often assumed that the Vandals were in relation to the Lugiern; it is unclear whether they were identical or Lugier to the Vandals, or the Vandals to the Association of Lugier. This thesis is not without controversy, but it would also be an explanation for the subsequent disappearance of Lugier from the ancient sources.
