Lühhike öppetus

Lühhike öppetus (Estonian for Short instruction, according to the modern spelling ' Lühike opetus '), was the first periodical in the Estonian language.

It was 1766-1767 edited by Peter Ernst Wilde in Põltsamaa and described several simple medical techniques that could be applied to the land from the farmers.

The full title of the paper was Lühhike õppetus mis lake Moned head rohhud täeda antakse, ni hästi innimeste kui ka veiste haigusse ning viggaduste vasto to German as: Short instruction for the treatment of diseases and injuries in humans and livestock.

It was printed weekly, each issue had four pages, on the whole, published 41 editions. August Wilhelm Hupel was responsible for the translation of the original German texts into Estonian.

Assessment

Lühhike öppetus contained no messages and can therefore not be classified as a newspaper despite its format. Some sources refer to it as a journal, other than delivery ex plant or even as a 41 - volume book. The first Estonian newspaper in 1807, first published Tarto maa rahva Näddali - Leht is generally regarded.
